The Techniques and Reflections on My Work

Before I started working on the track, I decided to try something a more experimental than before. I’ve played with modular synthesizer for two years but have never done a complete track with it, so I decided to make a dawless track with the system.

Conceptually, I want to create a generative patch with the modular system let the sound evolve on its own. By using a lot of random modulation, such as lfos, sample and hold to slowly changing the structure and timbre, also texture will constantly keep shifting. The piece is more of an experiment focusing how patch is generated different sound directions from the basic connections, rather than complete structure that’s creating on a DAW.

During the initial experiment, I tried a lot of modules that generates random modulations. And the attributes that I’m adding modulation is adsr, the sequencer, cv controls on the vcf and the vco. The final system was using Malekko Varigate as main sequencer, Qu-bit Chance as main random output sending random cvs out. Then the final sound passing through the huge effect in Intellijel Rainmaker.

This is the first time I try to make a generative patch on euro rack system. The things I need to improve is that I used more modules than I had expected this time. I always believe that I should set some limitations when playing with modules.
