Reflections on “LINKED”

The event we’ve done was experiencing the work of Graeme Miller’s work “LINKED”. This is a very special art project that combines a city walk with sound exploration. We put on the headphones and a signal capture device to listen to the recordings he’ve took for the past years. As we walked through the streets, these hidden signals allowed us to hear stories that had been forgotten.

For me, it was a meaningful and touched project. I felt a deep connection to the past lives of these strangers. This work took him many years to record these sounds and hide the signals in different buildings. He put a lot of effort into capturing these precious memories.  As we walk along the route, we experienced how people live and got along in the past ages. The sounds took us back decades and showed us what life used to be like there. The work reminds me how sound could use as a medium for recording history. It acts like a time machine, presenting a past that cannot be seen with the eyes.

Having this experience has refreshed my knowledge of creating with sound. I began to realize that sound has huge potential for expressing emotions. The thing I can learned from this work is that, the work don’t have to be seen or concrete. Let the audience engaging into the work and let them feel the temperature and emotion behind the work is also a good entry point. This immersive experience allows everyone to build their own pictures in their minds.
